What we do

Functional, well-designed, handcrafted products that provide sustainable livelihoods to craftspeople.

At The Initiative, every piece created is unique and handmade from quality materials by people who are treated fairly for their labour. Idiosyncratic design elements are not flaws, but aspects that make your product unique and one of a kind.

We train and employ talented and motivated women who are seeking economic independence but may be unable to take up regular jobs due to lack of education and/or family obligations.

The Initiative's founder grew up experiencing soulful products lovingly crafted by her grandmother for daily use. Knowing that every decision about the products had been made keeping her in mind, only made them more valuable.

It is this meaningful connection we strive for, while designing our products. Merging a passion for handmade items and the rationality of product design, we bring that kind of soul and value into people's everyday lives.  We believe that every one of them tells a story – where it came from, who made it and how. Every little cut, stitch, fold and hem is made by hands just like yours.

To sustain the handcrafting practices that we love so dearly, we ensure that they provide sustainable livelihoods to their practitioners.

In today’s fast paced lifestyle, we reintroduce the magic of anticipation and surprise that comes with ordering a one of a kind piece. Our products give people a chance to slow down, take the time to build memories and share stories around them, and pass them on as well worn heirlooms.
